Red Pine (Pinus resinosa)
THE TREE Natural Range Canada: Maritimes to western Ontario; U.S.: Eastern Seaboard to southern Minnesota, north of the Mason-Dixon Line Stature Reach heights of 80 feet and diameters of 3 feet. THE WOOD Appearance Heartwood varies from red to a red-brown; sapwood ranges from pure white to yellow. Grain is uniform; medium-textured. Weight 34 lbs/ft3 @ 12% moisture content Hardness 560 lbf (kiln-dried) Workability Machines easily, holds nails and screws well. Finishes well but takes paint poorly. Durability Dings and mars very easily; moderately resistant to decay, except when in contact with soil.
